Cost of Attendance
The cost of attendance (COA) represents the maximum amount of financial aid that you can receive. The COA is also an estimate of the total expenses required for one year in an educational program. This estimate includes tuition/fees, books & supplies, and allowances for living expenses. At UF, COAs are determined by the Office for Student Financial Affairs. Refer to the SFA site for more information about how COAs are calculated.

Why Does the COA Matter?
1. Cost Comparison
The COA is the best figure available to compare the costs of veterinary schools. Tuition is not the only number that matters in cost comparison! You should also take into consideration the area cost of living, how much you’ll need to make trips home, etc. While the COA does not necessarily represent the actual, full cost of veterinary school, it is a very close estimate.
Note: The current COA is a good estimate for next year’s COA as it is typically not anticipated to change substantially.
2. Financial Aid
The COA represents the maximum amount of financial aid that you can receive. Please note that “financial aid” includes scholarships, grants, and loans. You cannot receive financial aid that goes above and beyond the COA. Financial Aid to cover COA is available for and divided up among the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters.
The good news is that you are never required to borrow loans up to the full COA! The COA is a maximum, not a requirement. Conservative borrowing in veterinary school is strongly encouraged.
Special Note: Students who are married and/or have children should understand that federal financial aid is designed to help pay for the costs for the student to attend school; it is not intended to support other family members. The only exception is for students who have dependent children in daycare. Such students may be able to receive a COA increase for daycare. Requests for daycare cost allowances must be submitted to the Student Financial Aid and Scholarships Office.
DVM Program Costs
Tuition and Fees
Tuition and fees are subject to change without notice. Tuition and fees are payable in two equal installments in August and January of each academic year. DVM students do not pay tuition in the summer semester. However, students are required to participate in classroom and clinic activities in the summer.
Tuition costs at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (UFCVM) are comparatively modest for Florida resident DVM students. UFCVM offers an outstanding value to its DVM students by providing a high-quality educational experience at a very reasonable cost.
2024-25 Tuition & Fees
- Florida residents: $28,790
- Non-residents: $45,400
Cost of Living
The cost of living in Gainesville, Florida is comparatively low. This reduces the total costs of education for Florida veterinary students as compared with other metropolitan areas. Food, transportation, and housing allowances are included in the DVM COA. These allowances are based on actual Gainesville-area costs and updated annually.
Health Insurance
All students in the DVM program are required to be covered under a comprehensive health insurance policy. You will be automatically enrolled in the UF student insurance plan unless you have an approved insurance waiver on file by the designated semester deadline. Information on health insurance, waivers, and deadline dates is available on the UF Health Compliance Office website.
Insurance is not automatically included in the COA. Students who are enrolled in the UF student insurance plan may request for the insurance cost to be added to their COA. Students not enrolled in the UF student insurance who carry an insurance policy in their own name may also request for their insurance cost to be added to their COA. Insurance policies carried in a spouse’s or parent’s name do not qualify for the COA add-on.
Insurance add-on requests must be made in writing to the UFCVM Financial Aid Coordinator at: sfa-vet@mail.ufl.edu.
