The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (UF CVM) does consider transfer applications to the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program from students who are enrolled in other colleges or schools of veterinary medicine. To be considered, the following terms must be fulfilled:
- There must be a vacancy in the intended class to transfer. Limits such as maximum class size and college enrollment will not be exceeded. We are currently only considering transfer applicants for a fall term start in the second year of veterinary school.
- Transfer requests will be considered only from students who are enrolled in a college or school of veterinary medicine that is accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA).
- There must be a valid reason for requesting a transfer. Acceptable reasons include, but are not limited to, the health of the student or a family member or a change in spousal residence that is dictated by their profession.
- The transfer student must have completed all requirements that are required for admission to our college.
- The candidate requesting a transfer must be in good academic standing at their parent institution. The transfer request must also be approved by the parent institution.
- The DVM curriculum from one school rarely matches that of another. The curriculum of the parent institution must have a degree of similarity and compatibility to the UF CVM curriculum.
- Final approval and acceptance of transfer students are prerogatives of the Dean, who will rely on the recommendations of the Associate Dean of Academic and Student Affairs, Assistant Dean of Admissions and Student Success, and the UF CVM Admissions Committee.
Minimum Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:
- Have successfully completed at least one year (equivalent of two semesters) of the veterinary curriculum at an AVMA accredited college of veterinary medicine.
- Be in good academic standing and not on academic warning, probation, or dismissal status.
- Must be a United States citizen or a permanent US resident (green card holder).
- Have an academic record comparable to currently enrolled DVM students to suggest future academic success in the veterinary program.
- Be able to provide evidence of non-cognitive attributes comparable to currently enrolled DVM students, such as participation in extracurricular and community activities, leadership and communication skills, and experience working with animals.

Application Review
The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine places candidates in two independent applicant pools based on residency: State-Funded and Self-Funded seats. Residency is determined by the University of Florida Office of Admissions and not by the College of Veterinary Medicine. All students in State-Funded and Self-Funded seats will remain in that position throughout the duration of the DVM program, regardless of any changes in residency status while in veterinary school.
Candidates will have their transfer application reviewed by the UF CVM Admissions Committee. Candidates will be evaluated on a number of criteria, including academic history and experience, veterinary and animal experience, community involvement, and overall professionalism.
Interview
Select candidates will be invited to participate in our Interview process, conducted virtually via Zoom. Each transfer applicant will be interviewed by a two- or three- member panel. Candidates will have a behavioral interview which will be evaluated on a number of factors such as teamwork, integrity, maturity, and problem-solving.
