The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine conducted early interviews from Saturday, November 17th to Friday, December 7, 2012

The University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine conducted early interviews from Saturday, November 17th to Friday, December 7, 2012. Sixty-two applicants (including in-state and out-of-state residents) were able to visit the college and enjoy tours, shadowing in the hospitals, and meeting with faculty, staff, and students. Early Interviews once again received rave reviews from candidates and we hope to continue the process for the fall 2013 admissions cycle. More information regarding the Early Interview process will be posted on the website when the application cycle begins again in June 2013.

The remaining UFCVM interviews will be held on Saturday, February 2nd and Saturday, February 9, 2012. Eligible candidates will be notified via email in mid-to-late January if they receive an interview offer. We estimate that between 170-180 applicants (including both in-state and out-of-state residents) will be invited for the spring 2013 interviews.

Those candidates that are not selected for interview will be notified in two batches in late-December and mid-to-late January.

If you have any questions about the admissions process, please contact the Office for Students and Instruction by phone at 352-294-4244 or by email at chaparrol@ufl.edu.

The 2013 American Pre-Veterinary Medical Association (APVMA) Symposium was held on March 1-3 at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine (UFCVM).

The original post relating to the APVMA Symposium appears below:

The APVMA Symposium is an event designed to promote pre-veterinary interest in professional veterinary medicine. The Symposium provides an opportunity for pre-veterinary students to meet and interact with veterinarians through labs and lectures covering a number of different fields and career paths. The Symposium is held each year at different colleges of veterinary medicine within the United States, and the UFCVM is looking forward to the opportunity of using its state-of-the art hosptials and teaching spaces to support this initiative.

The Symposium will begin Friday night, March 1, 2013, with a banquet and sign-in at the Hilton University of Florida Conference Center in Gainesville (Contract Pending). Labs and lectures will be scheduled from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM on Saturday, March 2, 2013. Advanced registration will be required for labs and lectures. A nominal fee will be required to register for the Symposium (TBD). In addition, all pre-vet attendees must be registered members of the APVMA. Please visit the APVMA website to become a registered member.

The (APVMA) is a national organization of students whose goal is to stimulate interest in the field of veterinary medicine, provide open communication between pre-veterinary clubs and organizations nationally, provide resources to students on pursuing the field of veterinary medicine, and holding the annual national APVMA symposium.

We want to clarify that the deadline for submitting your UF professional Application and supplemental materials is September 24, 2012.

Class of 2017 Applicants:

We want to clarify that the deadline for submitting your UF professional Application and supplemental materials is September 24, 2012.

We also seem to be having some confusion on GRE codes for the 2017 Admissions Cycle. The UF Veterinary School code for the GRE test is 5753. Some applicants have been incorrectly using 5812. If you used 5812, don’t panic! Our office still receives those scores but it takes more time to do so.

If you have any questions about either of these clarifications, please contact our admissions office at 352-294-4244.

I hope your applications are progressing smoothly. I look forward to reviewing them in October.

FAQs for common questions regarding issues with the UF Supplemental Application.

We are receiving a high volume of email and phone questions regarding the following issues with the UF Supplemental Application:

1. I have completed the vet med professional application, why can’t I access the supplemental documents?

Once the vet med prof app is completed, you will be taken to our supplemental page. You will enter transcript information, add GRE scores, and acknowledge that you have reviewed the Admissions Requirements – then you will be able to download the three supplemental documents.

2. I am due to take the GRE next week for the first time, how do I report the scores?

You add the month and year the GRE test will be taken and write 0 on the score section. Once you take the test, go back and enter the scores obtained.

3. I checked my account and my GRE scores have been not entered, even though I took the test on May and ETS has assured me the scores were sent to UF.

You are responsible to enter your scores. We verify if the scores entered have been received by our office.

4. I cannot access the supplemental documents because GRE scores have not been entered.

Again, you are responsible to enter your GRE scores. We will verify if the scores you entered match the scores received in our office.

5. Have you received my transcripts (GRE scores, supplemental forms, etc.)? I mailed them 3 weeks ago.

Once the professional school application is completed we will need 5 business days to update the information. If you complete your application by the end of the admissions cycle (closer to the September 24th deadline) it will take longer to update your account due to the large volume of documents our office has to process.

6. Can I mail the transcripts and supplemental forms in one package?

Yes, as long as the transcripts are officially sealed.

7. I will be completing a pre-requisite course in the Spring 2013 term, how do I enter this information on the Inventory Sheet?

Write the term on the Year Taken section. For example- Year taken: Spring 2013

The Dog is a 3-credit online course designed specifically for students planning careers in Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technical Programs.

The Dog

The Dog is a 3 credit online course designed specifically for students planning careers in Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Technical Programs.

Since dogs are one of the main animal models studied in veterinary school, this class is an excellent bridge from a student’s undergraduate studies to veterinary school. This class is team taught by various faculty at the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine. Students taking the class will be introduced to a number of important topics, some of which include evolution, domestication, anatomy, neuroscience, physiology, health, and disease.

Testimonials about The Dog

“The course is really, really amazing….I think the lectures are so interesting. Thanks to distance learning, I can have the privilege to attend Veterinary quality classes!”
Anik Boileau
M.S. student
Dog Class student, Fall 2012

“This is my favorite class I am taking this semester – and that includes the class in which I am working with a pregnant heifer! It is so directed towards what I love to learn and what I want to do in my future career path and everybody who is lecturing seems to know their material so well and are passionate about the topic they are lecturing. It is one of the few classes I voluntarily enjoy studying for and enjoy doing so!”
Megan Kelley
Clemson student
Dog Class student, Fall 2012

“Breed predispositions are an important part of forming a differential diagnosis, and ‘The Dog’ is a great way for pre-veterinary students to become familiar with this concept. The anatomy and physiology overview is another way for students to get a head start in the veterinary curriculum by allowing one to look at dogs from a more clinical frame of mind.”
Kyle Donnelly
UF DVM student, Class of 2014

“The Dog class is a brilliant addition to the schedule of any student whether they are looking to pursue a career working in an animal related field or whether they simply wish to gain further insight into Man’s best friend.”
Rose Worobec
UF Undergraduate student, Class of 2014

The Director of the class, Dr. Patrick Larkin, pioneered the development of several other online biology classes while teaching at Santa Fe College. These include General Biology, Genetics and Evolution, and Introduction to Environmental Sciences.. For these efforts he was awarded the Provost’s Award in Recognition of Teaching and Learning Excellence in 2010. Dr. Larkin was also an invited reviewer for the biology textbook “Biology, Life on earth” by Audersirk, Audersirk, and Byers.

This course will be offered every fall and spring semesters starting in Fall 2012 and is available to UF undergraduate students as well as students at other colleges and Universities around the world. For additional information about the class see (http://sacs.vetmed.ufl.edu/programs/undergraduate/).

Current Availability for Students:

Continuing education* (CE) route for UF students

College credit route for non-UF students
